The Yoga Philosophy Sessions

An ongoing series of workshops (a study group, if you will) for yoga teachers, student teachers and experienced yoga practitioners.

An opportunity, once a month, for us to enjoy delving deeply into the wisdom and philosophy of yoga. We will begin our adventures by looking at the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali, taking our time, line by line, to investigate this extraordinary text which contains profound and practical advice for understanding ourselves and the world we share.

We will be looking at the Sanskrit and considering what the text means for us in our daily lives. There will be plenty of scope for discussion as well as some practical exercises, chanting and meditation.

I am hopeful that this group will grow into a warm and supportive place where we can share this ancient knowledge for our mutual benefit.

Upcoming Dates…

Hopefully starting again in January 2023. Dates to be confirmed (if confirming is something we can do) nearer the time…

Please Note: It is in the organic nature of these sessions that sometimes we cover more more material than anticipated and sometimes less – the following gives a good idea of the topic that will be covered, but it is not limited to, or guaranteed to be, exactly what is written below. It depends on the mood of the day and the interests of the group.

A Saturday in January, 2023; 10:30am to 12:30pm
What gets in the way of us achieving a state of yoga? What gets in the way of us being able to move forwards in life as we’d like to? Patañjali highlights likely problems along the way and suggests ways to overcome them, and his suggestions are as applicable today as they were 800 years ago. The world may change, but it seems we humans change very little.

A Saturday in February, 2023; 10:30am to 12:30pm
The Evolution of Samādhi – coming to a state of samādhi is a process, it takes time. We will look at what that process involves and consider the state of samādhi and how we can relate to it. We will then have come to the end of chapter one, Samādhipādah, and will review what we have learned.

A Saturday in March, 2023; 10:30am to 12:30pm
Beginning chapter two, Sādhanapādah, the practical chapter! Today we will be considering our perception and the kleśa-s, the things that get in the way of us seeing clearly. It’s a juicy topic with lots to get stuck into – come along and join us if you can! Having an awareness of these things shines a light on much of what happens in our lives, and that light dispells the darkness.
